THE LAST OUT GATE

the world premiere of a new play by Kevin Anthony

Directed by Casey Bradley

With just two weeks to the National Bull Riding Championship and sporting a career ending injury, champion rider Tyson Garrett’s world is changed by the unexpected arrival of his nephew who desperately needs his help.

Reckoning with how the forces of environment, religion, and family can play upon queer lives, The Last Out Gate is a coming of self story, set against the backdrop of the South and the violent world of bull riding. It’s also a love story, exploring the imprint of love, community, and family on the course of someones life.

[The Last Out Gate] blends elements we’ve seen before but in unexpected ways. Brokeback Mountain … [but] unlike small time ranch hands, Ennis and Jack, from Annie Proulx’s eponymous novella, main character Tyson Garrett has a national profile as a PRCAchampion bull rider, a (barely) working ranch staffed by people he trusts… [and] a complex and sometimes conflicted relationship with… the ghosts of growing up in the emotionally stunting cul-de-sac of a small town in Texas… With two coming-out stories that reflect each other like twin mirrors… [The Last Out Gate] offers us a radical reversal of what it takes to really be an open-hearted, bona fide, self accepting man in a culture hostile to anyone non-normative.”
